REGGAE
El reggae es un género musical de origen jamaiquino (el adjetivo jamaicano se aplica a las personas). El término reggae algunas veces es usado ampliamente para referirse a la mayoría de los ritmos jamaiquinos, incluyendo ska, dub y rocksteady. El término es más específicamente usado para indicar un estilo particular que se originó después del desarrollo del rocksteady. En este sentido, el reggae incluye dos sub-géneros: el roots reggae y el dancehall.

El término reggae es una derivación de ragga, que a su vez es una abreviación de raggamuffin, que en inglés significa literalmente harapiento. Se utilizó esta etiqueta para nombrar a los pobres de Jamaica, y también a los Rastas y a los movimientos culturales de los barrios pobres. Actualmente se llama generalmente ragga o raggamuffin a algunos subestilos del reggae. Otras fuentes señalan que el término reggae proviene de una canción de The Maytals, llamada "Do the reggay", en la que la palabra "reggay" significaría "regular", es decir, gente normal y corriente. Hoy día, está muy difundido por todo el mundo este ritmo, y habitantes de islas vecinas como las islas de San Andrés y Providencia en Colombia la interpretan como música propia

Robert Nesta Marley nació en Nine Miles, Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica el 6 de febrero de 1945 y murió † en Miami el 11 de mayo de 1981, más conocido como Bob Marley, fue un músico jamaicano y miembro del movimiento Rastafari. Su fe fue una parte importante de su carrera y ahora es considerado por muchos como un profeta de Rastafari.

Robert Nesta Marley, nacido en Nine Miles (Rhoden Hall, Saint Ann) una pequeña localidad al norte de la isla de Jamaica, en el Mar Caribe, era hijo de Cedella Booker, jamaiquina de 18 años y de Norval Marley, capitán del ejército británico, de 50 años, que se desentendió de su hijo, por miedo a ser desheredado. A finales de los años cincuenta, Bob se trasladó con su madre a Kingston, la capital. Era la ciudad donde los habitantes de las zonas rurales acudían para mejorar su situación económica. Por desgracia para la mayoría, su destino eran los barrios pobres.

Bob creció en ese ambiente donde conoció a un amigo llamado Neville O’Riley Livingston, más conocido como Bunny, con quien comenzó a interesarse por la música, llegando a componer y tocar algunas canciones. Muy influenciados ambos por las emisoras del sur de los Estados Unidos que conseguían captar con sus radios en las cuales escuchaban canciones de artistas como Ray Charles, Curtis Mayfield, Brook Benton o Fats Domino, y también grupos como The Drifters muy populares en Jamaica. Mientras, Bob alternó el trabajo con la música, ya que consiguió un empleo en una empresa de fundición, donde se quemó en un ojo mientras trabajaba. Tanto Bob como Bunny recibieron la ayuda musical de Joe Higgs, un cantante que gozó de cierta fama en Jamaica, aunque ya venido a menos, que se ganaba la vida impartiendo clases de canto para principiantes. En una de esas clases Bob y Bunny conocieron a otro joven músico llamado Winston Hubert McIntosh (Peter Tosh). En 1962 Bob Marley participó en una audición para un productor musical llamado Leslie Kong que, impresionado, lo invitó a un estudio para grabar algunas canciones. Al año siguiente Bob decidió que el mejor camino para alcanzar su sueño era mediante un grupo. Compartió su idea con Bunny y Peter y los tres forman los "Wailing Wailers". El nuevo grupo ganó la simpatía del percusionista rastafari Alvin Patterson, que los presento al productor Clement Dodd. A mediados de 1963 Dodd vio a los Wailing Wailers y decidió promocionar al grupo. Los Wailing Wailers lanzaron su primer single, "Simmer Down", con la discográfica Coxsone a finales de 1963. La formación original estaba compuesta por Bob, Bunny, Peter, Junior Braithwaite y dos coristas, Beverly Kelso y Cherry Smith.
